Linking to a Web resource

  1. Start on the main page of your course. If you haven't turned editing on, do so.
  2. Go to the week (or unit) where you want to put the file. In the “Add a resource...” dropdown, choose “URL”.
  3. This will take you to a page titled “Adding a new URL to something”, where something is the name of the unit to which you're adding the file.
  4. In the “Name” blank, give your resource a name. (This name is for the students to see. It may be different from the actual title of the page on the Web.)
  5. Below that, you will see a box title “Content”, and inside that box a blank marked “External URL”. Enter your URL in that blank. I normally visit the resource in another tab of my Web browser, and then cut-and-paste the URL from the address bar, as URL's are extremely sensitive to typos.
  6. If you want to force the way that your resource is displayed, you can use the “Display” dropdown in the “Appearance” box to do so.
  7. If you want to make your file visible only after a certain time (or only within a certain time period), you can change the settings in the “Restrict access” box to do so.
  8. At the bottom of the page, there are two buttons and a link. Normally, you want to click “Save and return to course”, which saves your link and returns you to the course main page. “Save and display” will save your link and then try to display it; unfortunately, it doesn't always look the same from “Save and display” as it does when you click to it from the course, so “Save and display” isn't as useful as it should be. “Cancel” just takes you back to the course main page, without saving anything; Moodle will pretend that you never tried to add that link.
