Contacting someone from a profile

Additional resources

A profile contains some information about a user. Generally, this is contact information, plus (optionally) a profile photo.

Finding someone's profile

There are two main ways to find someone's profile.

  1. If the user is online at the same time you are, you can click on her name in the “Online users” block. This block is usually third from the bottom of the left column on every page in Moodle.
  2. If the user is in a class with you, you can use the Participants page in the course. To do this:
    • Go to the course (any page in the course will do).
    • Click the menu button in the top left of the page to open the nav drawer.
    • Just below the title of your course in the nav drawer should be a link marked “Participants”. Click that link.
    • On the resulting page, click the name of the person you want.

Direct Moodle messaging

Moodle allows you to send a person a message directly from that person's profile. To do so, follow these steps.

  • At the top of the profile, just underneath the person's name, there is a link marked “Message”. Click that link.
  • This will pop up a dialog box into which you can type a quick message. You can send what you've typed by clicking the “Send message” button.
  • If you want more context, click the “View conversation” link at the bottom of the dialog box. You will be taken to a page with all the messages you have exchanged with this person. Underneath the messages is a text box where you can type your message. (If you've exchanged a lot of messages with the person, you may have to scroll down to get to the text box.)
  • When you're done with your message, click the button marked “Send message” underneath the text box.
  • If the person you're messaging is logged on to Moodle when you send the message, she will get an alert popup in her Moodle window immediately.
  • If the person you're messaging is not logged on when you send the message, Moodle will send it as email. In addition, Moodle will give her an alert about the message next time she does log on.

Indirect methods

If you prefer not to use Moodle messaging, profiles often have enough information that you can contact the person outside Moodle. Profiles generally have email addresses, so you can email the person. Profiles sometimes have phone numbers or Skype ID's, so you can contact the person using those means as well.
