Finding and getting into a course

There are two main ways of finding a Moodle course within Moodle:

1. If you're already enrolled

This is the usual case.

  1. When you first log in to Moodle, you will be looking at a page called your dashboard. (This is also the page you reach when you click the “Dashboard” link on the upper left of any page in the site.)
  2. Down the middle of that page, you'll see a list of all the Moodle courses in which you're enrolled. The most recent courses are at the top.
  3. Find the course you want and click on it.
  4. You should now be looking at the course's main page.

2. At any time (whether or not you're enrolled)

This way is useful especially the first time you enter a course, when you may not yet be enrolled in the Moodle part of the course.

  1. When you first log in to Moodle, you will be looking at a page called your dashboard. (This is also the page you reach when you click the “Dashboard” link on the upper left of any page in the site.)
  2. At the top of the list of courses, there's a box marked “Search courses”. Enter your course name or number into the box, and click "Go".
  3. You will get a list of courses whose names contain the string you searched for. If the list doesn't have the course you want, double-check your search string, make it more precise if you can, and search again until you do get the course you want.
  4. Click on the course, and you'll be taken to its main page.

But my course doesn't show up! What's with that? (students only)

Moodle courses are initially created in a state that doesn't let students look at them. This gives the professors a chance to get their courses ready without confusing students unnecessarily.

Professors decide when their courses are ready, and make them visible to students. Often, this doesn't happen until right at the start of classes for the term. (Sometimes it doesn't happen at all—not every professor uses Moodle for every course.) So if you're looking for your courses before the term starts and you don't see them, be patient.

If classes have started and your course still isn't visible, ask your professor about it. Usually, it's just an oversight. Sometimes, of course, it's because the professor has chosen not to use Moodle for that course, in which case he or she will tell you so. It practically never happens that the course is visible to some students and not others, so you can be quite confident that your whole class has the same problem you do.
